The Old Ghost Road

Just the name alone  is evocative of a bygone era.    Ride past old mining relics, ascend through native forest and break out on to alpine tops offering breath-taking views.   Descend in to open river valleys littered with lakes and tarns.    Ride along the slopes of a stunning river gorge.

Historic mining pack tracks form each end of The Old Ghost Road.   At the northern end, the trail starts from Seddonville, follows the Mokihinui Gorge and on to Goat Creek.   The southern end provides a stunning ride through native forest from Lyell in the Buller Gorge and over the Lyell Tops to Ghost Lake Hut.

The Old Ghost Road is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trails network.    We at ASURE Chelsea Gateway Motor Lodge are proud to be an Official Partner of The Old Ghost Road and New Zealand Cycle Trails.

Kawatiri Beach Reserve & Kawatiri River Trail

Recently completed (2017), these trails link the Buller River and North Beach and are the result of a project co-ordinated by the Buller Cycling Club.   The trails and bridges have been built over several years by a dedicated group of volunteers with strong support from local businesses who have supplied machinery and labour, resulting in an superb asset for the community .

Heaphy Track Mountain Biking

The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.    Mountain biking over the winter months was trialled for 3 seasons from 2011 and has now been introduced permanently.    You can mountain bike the track between 1 May and 30 September each year.

It is a 2 or 3 day ride requiring a good level of fitness and intermediate to advanced skills.   The ride requires good preparation but the reward is stunning scenery across a variety of landscapes including rainforest, river flats, tussock downs and nikau groves.
